The Angel that presided o’er my birth – William Blake
The Angel that presided o’er my birth
Poem by William Blake
The Angel that presided o’er my birth
Said, “Little creature, formed of joy and mirth,
Go love without the help of any thing on earth.”
And, with luck, without their hindrance too?
All The World is Green – Tom Waits

Poem – The Ocean
I ask Sophia
‘Is a life like this really the best we can do?’
I don’t expect an answer, but
It feels right to ask the question
Below departing clouds of grief
I see birds on a small sandy island
Many birds feel pecked so they peck at others
The fascination of irritation
‘You mustn’t understand, got to get on,’
Says practically everyone
Get on with pecking the innocent
And walking in blindness?
Many birds have feathers missing and several scars
Inflicted by others’ fear
There are small twigs on the beach that can trip them
If they forget to look
Below that, by the tide-line
Two charred pieces of driftwood
Both tiny
One called fear, the other ignorance
The waves bump them into the shore
Patiently eroding them to nothingness
Then there’s the ocean
The ocean is boundless and deep
An ocean of wisdom and love
A curved smooth horizon in every direction
This IS the bottom line
One sip and the bird is whole
Are years of torment a necessary prelude
So we never forget this sight?
Completed return to the land of feeling
Reawakening of inner sight?
Her reply? A blink of an eye
Can others see this without suffering? Yes
Would I have still seen this if I’d had some protection? Yes
Do we choose to suffer – the New Age dogma? No
Laying the blame coats the glass with soot
Escapist ‘theories’ keep it dark
Authentic suffering is the cleansing fire
Without will, but willingly
Knowing I know nothing
I dip a toe in
And help the pen move

Funny Poems – The Funny Pair
The Ballad of Ebenezer and Florence
apparently been going on for about 30 years.
Where do they get the energy? And why?
It needs a pic – possibly featuring a see-saw)
‘The world’s turned pale, hidden in snow,’
Said Eb, from the window, to his partner, Flo
‘What we need is a holiday, somewhere warm.
What would you like, where shall we go?’
Flo scowls at Eb
To be fair, it’s her turn!
‘I’m sure I don’t mind!’
She coils like a worm.
‘You enjoyed the Bahamas
The sea and the sand
And dancing each night
To the steel band.’
‘If that’s what you want
I expect I’ll survive
There were lots of young women
You know how to jive.’
‘I was thinking of you
You could do with the light
But if you’d prefer
We can stay here and fight!’
‘No, you’re right,’ Flo concurs
‘I remember your joy
You went fishing for Marlin
You were like a young boy!’
‘That’s a very good point
I can see your idea
But there’s far better fishing
Barely 10 miles from here.’
‘We don’t have to go there
That was just one suggestion.
Please, look at the atlas
Then make your selection.’
‘Such a typical view
I’ve been stereotyped
I’m a man – so I’ll fish.
What infinite tripe.’
‘Look, here’s the damned globe
Stick a pin in the thing
The extension’s upstairs
You can give me a ring!’
‘The world’s turned pale, hidden in snow,’
Said Eb, on the phone, to his partner, Flo
‘What we need is a holiday, somewhere warm.
What would you like, where shall we go?’

Who Do You Serve?
Who Do You Serve?
(A song exploring the ups and downs of life: confidence, doubt, illusion, motive, hope …
)
There’s a strapping young man on the building site
with a custom truck and the latest tools
he’s good at his work and as big as a house
he commands respect; nobody’s fool
the world in his palm
note the swagger and charm
but who do you serve?
There’s a good-looking lass in the up-town gym
everyone wants to please her; everyone knows her name
she has oodles of charm; she’s fit; she’s slim
her smile says she knows it; she’s controlling the game
the world in her palm
note the swagger and charm
but who do you serve?
See the scribe at his laptop, picking fault with the herd
publish on-line for the whole world to mug
maybe there’ll be music; more chance to be heard
guitars, synths and drums – the adrenaline drug
the world in his lap
beware of the trap
who do you serve?
Memories – John Galsworthy
Memories – John Galsworthy
Not the least hard thing to bear when
they go from us, these quiet friends,
is that they carry away with them so
many years of our lives. Yet, if they
find warmth therein, who would
begrudge them those years that they
have so guarded?
And whatever they take,
be sure they have deserved.
