The Quest

(July 2003)

Four knights in black armour, a mission, a quest
Four knights on black horses, they gallop, no rest
They fly o'er the moor, hooves on granite raise sparks
The harness in tension, devotion intense

Gently parting waters
From the lake emerges
A giant crab-like creature
Sunlight pings off glistening claws
Which shield the mounted priestess
Her throne, her shell, her womb

Alighting on shingle
The swallows surround her
Their echoes like kite strings
Which dragonflies follow

Four knights clad in steel pass close to the shore
Espying the lady, enamoured, enthralled
Four knights in devotion raise swords as they kneel
The dragonflies melting, sun shining on steel

She is beckoning the heroes
She is signalling the creature
Four claws arrange as easels
Four knights have unsure features

Brush and colour are provided
Men paint canvas at her sign
Sun at zenith, sweat on breastplates
Her instruction is divine

A fountain of patience, transforming their karma,
'Boys, your quest will be eased if you take off your armour.'
