Parenting in the UK

There has been very distressing news in the national newspapers. Despite initiatives by government to provide pre-school classes and social workers, it seems more than half of the nation's five year old children begin school lacking the most basic skills.  For example being able to hold a pencil or communicate in comprehensible English. Poverty and cuts have been blamed, but how much does it

healthy diet and poverty

Unplugged from food corporations I've heard some alarming tales from friends who work with people trapped in poverty and debt. The worst cases, due to the tax and benefits nightmare orchestrated by successive governments, are all people working full-time. Usually, they are working so many hours that they find it difficult to make the best decisions about what to eat. Understandably, when

eating healthy on a budget

Recent shopping trips have made two facts very plain:  1. Many customers, much younger than I, look extremely physically unfit/ or unwell.  2. Many customers look and sound bewildered when deciding what to buy  They would be less vulnerable to the mischief of food corporations' TV advertising and packaging if they had a list. Even better if it is a " food for wellbeing on a budget"

Debt Valley - and the route to escape

tags: advice, diet, poverty, support, wellbeing, debt There is an excellent documentary on the BBC about the debt trap aimed at very poor people, and the burgeoning loans / pawn shop "industry" that profits from it. Debt Valley video Succumbing to such problems tends to run in families, because the children learn what they see, and lack role models that would be helpful. FOOD BILLS

rainbow of fruit and veg for perfect diet - phytochemicals, vitamins, minerals.  Eating a rainbow of colour is an energizing way to add more vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals to our diets.  While supplements and energy drinks can add vitamins and minerals, we cannot come close to getting the thousands of phytochemicals found in colourful fruits and vegetables. via wellbeing news

optimum nutrition and poverty

Very bad 'health' news from the poor districts in South Wales. Following on from our article on the 'superfoods' that aren't widely promoted by the food 'industry', here is very sad news that victims of such corporations believe that fresh fruit and vegetables are more expensive than junk food, fast food and convenience foods. Scurvy and rickets are both reappearing in children; deficiency

Individual freedom versus corporations

I asked my pal in Illinois why the area he lives is so sparsely populated and yet Chicago (the nearest very big city) is bursting at the seams: "They move to the city for jobs, but ... Even the city jobs are few. America isn't what the rest of the world envisions it to be any more. I just read an article recently which said Americans need to realize that the 'golden' age of America is over.
